Babes of Bass Interview #1: MattieTrue
Bass n Babes founder Baby Kush wanted to start a conversation with women and queer artists in the bass music scene with the intention of inspiring others and getting to know the person behind the beat! Bass n Babes launched the interview series at Same Same But Different Festival in Southern California. While on the ground at SSBD, Bass n Babes founder Baby Kush had a chance to chat with MattieTrue and learn more about her journey and inspirations. Check it out!
Baby Kush: Who are women who have impacted your artistic journey?
MattieTrue: My ultimate woman is my mother. She’s so badass. Everyone in my family is a really incredible artist. My grandparents fucked at Woodstock and then had my mom and her twin sister, and now here I am today!
Baby Kush: What do you wish a younger version of yourself knew before you started your artistic journey?
MattieTrue: Life gets so much better. Growing up is really hard, especially when you're different and you're weird and you're too energetic. Then I found raving, and people uplifting me for being me. They’re like, that’s weird, I love it!
Baby Kush: Do you have any advice to other aspiring women DJs/producers?
MattieTrue: Stop talking to boys that want to be DJs, and you just be the DJ. You just have to do it. No one’s ever going to give you permission, you have to give yourself the permission. I do this because I love it so much. I love music.
Baby Kush: What is your dream back to back?
MattieTrue: What if I had a back to back with Skrillex? I love Skrillex. When I’m having a child, Skrillex is going to be playing in the hospital room. Also Joost Klein, he’s my everything. I try to embody his passion and energy.
Baby Kush: What do you want your legacy to be?
MattieTrue: Happiness, laughter, fun, free-form, just losing yourself. I just want to create more good times for people since I’ve been so blessed to have so many good times in the rave scene.
